The RED ONE camera is the digital alternative to 35mm film - low-cost, and offering all the advantages of a fully digital workflows.
The centrepiece is the super-35mm CMOS Sensor with 12 megapixel, offering all the possibilities of a selective depth of field. The large 29 sq. micron pixel ensure low noise, high dynamic range, and excellent colour matching. The high dynamic range means that image information in bright areas is retained –
the days of video are over, together with the typical artificial over-sharpening, burning-out, and missing information in dark areas.RED ONE has a resolution of 4K, 4K (4096 x 2304) which is four times the resolution of Full HD's 1920x1080.
The modular system can be used as a hand-held camera or integrated into a studio concept, and can be used with any professional equipment.
REDCODE, developed specifically for RED ONE, allows a large amount of data to be controlled, and the visually lossless codec (wavelet compression) results in a bandwidth of around 27 MB/s at 24 fps / 4K.
A further highlight is that RED ONE records in 12 bit RAW.
The camera settings such as exposure, white balance, gain/ISO, and so on are recorded, along with the images, in metadata. RAW means that it is possible to adjust exposure, white balance, gain/ISO etc. in post-production – lossless!

Digital cinema means digital film in cinema quality and cutting-edge high tech. Digital cinema provides aesthetics that are not possible with HD cameras. The RED ONE image looks like cinema film, and not video film. In some areas, such as resolution, RED ONE surpasses classical cinema cameras.
RED ONE has a superb low-light performance, and thanks to the very low noise it is excellent for blue or green screen work. In addition, production costs are lower, as it is no longer necessary to purchase, develop, and scan analogue film rolls.
Jim Jannard is the founder of RED Digital Cinema, and of the world brand Oakley. He is an enthusiastic cinematographer and photographer, owning one of the largest collections of cameras in the world.
Unsatisfied with the performance of today's HD cameras he and his crew started developing a high-end digital camera in 2005. The basic requirements were:
And he did it!
His goal was to enable independent film productions to attain excellent images on a small budget. The first step in democratising the film market has been taken - let’s shoot!
